We left the hotel at 8.30 and ready to go to SMK Al-Azhar Sempu. We were told that we would be judging the poetry reading and Miss English Club competition and of the most importantly meet the clubs!
We arrived at the school on time, we could see a group of students gathered near the gate with excitement. Soon Ms. Dyah and Ms. Dewi came to meet us and brought 5 young school journalists who couldn’t wait to interview us. They took us upstairs, to the second floor, where the hall was. As we walked upstairs we saw a big stage in the school ground, the poetry reading had already been started. There were around 50 audience and lots of students wearing Kang guru T-shirts around the school ground.
After a short interview with the school journalists, we went downstairs to sign 300 certificates for all the participants, the winners and the committees. We were glad that we had our five “bodyguards” (the journalists) with us all the time. They even made video of us signing 300 certificates…..ha ha ha!
Near the stage two tables were ready for us, the judges. They were about to announce the 10 finalists of English poetry reading for SD, SMP categories and 5 finalists of Miss Club 2008. We had to prepare ourselves as the competition started.
The finalists from both SD and SMP category were amazing. It was a tough decision for us as they were all so talented. They could read the poems very well. Some of them can even memorize them easily! Congratulations for all the winners! (Details for the winners see Dyah’s report)
The Miss club final was also tough because the five finalists had to answer random questions from Sue and I. And the winners goes to Umi Wiji Yeni from SMK Al on the first place, Liya Kholida on the second and Rita Veronica on the third place. Congratulations girls and keep on practicing! Phew…! The day was hot but it was fun!
After lunch there was a surprised visit from Jember. It was Umi with 3 other members of Get Me English Club. Umi came all the way from Jember just to meet KG! The next thing we did was what most students had been waiting for : The Club meeting.
The clubs meeting was on the second floor. Club members were rushing to the meeting room upstairs. We could see smiling and cheerful faces in the room. We asked Umi and the gang to join in too. The room was packed, there were about 70 students from both Fragrant water and Charming and 4 from Get Me English Club. We did various games. Sue started the first game with “spelling game” and then I continued with “find someone who” then word guessing game, numbers game, alphabet game and last but not least was the cluster game. The whole activities were full of laughter, shout and scream. Every one in the room was so enthusiastic and energetic, they participated well in every game. We were both soaked with sweat and…. it’s time for us to go back to our hotel to get change and get ready for the evening.
At around 7 pm we arrived at Al Azhar to attend the English camp activities. After we were seated, the club members were still doing some activities from the hand out as part of the English camp. They were divided into several groups taken randomly from different clubs. A few students from SMPK Santo Agustinus were also there. Each team performed something on the stage. They were so brave and they worked together very well as a team.
The next big thing was the entertainment. Sue and I were amazed to see all performances by Al-Azhar students. The Gandrung dance, performed by three gorgeous girls, a Kucing Garong song by a very talented little girl,Vita, then club members sang the Australia’s national anthem, Punjari dance, then a dangdut song by Elok who has a great voice and movement, then a very funny Indonesian skit “Ande- Ande Lumut” which has similar story as “the Princes and the Frog” the difference is the frog in this story is a giant crab. The drama was very entertaining. And the last performance was a cool band by Dahry and the gang.
Well my impression for the whole performance was ‘impressive’ and ‘very entertaining’ and I thing Al-Azhar is a great school with a multi talented students. I was impressed by the whole thing, once again it’s because the hard work of the committees Ms. Dyah, Ms Dewi and of course Tato! Thank you very much Al-Azhar, Frgrant Water English Club and Charming English Club, we hope that we can meet again in the future, keep active and thanks for your hospitality and warm welcome!
